I don't think it's a either or situation to be honest, you can definitely learn from both mentors and solo experiences, and I think many successful people can attest to that, like Steve Jobs. He never had a traditional mentor but still managed to drop some gems.

I think it's a bit of both, to be honest. You can definitely learn a lot and figure things out on your own, but having a mentor can accelerate your growth and help you avoid costly mistakes early on.
