Why does the hashrate heatmap basically look like a treasure map for the cheapest electricity?

Just took a look at the hashrate distribution and it’s wild how it matches up exactly with where power is dirt cheap. Miners are literally just chasing the lowest kWh rates around the globe. The whole thing is basically just a giant arbitrage chart for electricity, right?

I think that's a fair point, given that the lowest hashrate locations tend to be in areas with cheap power sources, but it's also worth considering the fact that mining hardware generates heat and noise, so you'd also want to factor in local noise ordinances and regulations regarding large-scale server farms. Still, as you said, the cost of electricity is a huge determining factor for where mining operations set up shop. It's all about ROI in the end.

i think that's a pretty accurate description, people who can get electricity for pennies on the dollar are basically getting a huge head start in the crypto mining game, it's not just about the hashrate but also the costs involved in running a mining operation.

Yeah I think that's exactly what it is dude, the cheapest electricity in an area usually means lower running costs for miners and thus they can afford to charge lower fees, which is why you see those areas lit up on the heatmap. Makes total sense when you think about it.

I think that's pretty on point, considering the cost of electricity is a huge factor in determining profitability. It's no secret that the US, particularly places like Texas and Wyoming, offer incredibly cheap electricity to miners. If the network's decentralized nature is all about being resistant to censorship, it's also about allowing people in areas with abundant, affordable power to mine competitively.

I was thinking the same thing, it's like the heatmap is showing us where to find the sweet spots for maximum profitability. Anyone have any insight into how the heatmap is calculated or what the criteria are for the color coding?

Yeah that's exactly what it is, the hashrate heatmap is basically a map of where the cheapest power is, no surprise China and Eastern Europe dominate. It's all about the bottom line, miners will follow the cheapest kwH to maximize profits. I'd love to see a similar heatmap for renewables, that'd be a game changer.

It’s literally just economics—miners chase the cheapest power because margins are razor-thin. Electricity is the name of the game, so the heatmap basically just follows where the energy is dirt cheap. No surprise there.

It’s literally just the market being efficient. Mining margins are razor-thin, so operators have to set up shop wherever electricity is dirt cheap to actually turn a profit.
