Why Bitcoin’s Energy Use Might Actually Boost Renewable Growth – Is That a Myth?

I keep hearing the narrative that BTC mining is actually a catalyst for renewable energy by acting as a buyer of last resort, but is that legit or just hopium? It feels like a convenient counter to the energy FUD, but maybe there's real data showing miners are funding new solar/wind builds. What's your take—are we actually helping the grid or just greenwashing?

I think it's worth noting that the energy use of Bitcoin can serve as a catalyst for renewable growth, especially when countries are looking to increase their energy efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Governments may see this as an opportunity to upgrade their grids and incentivize the adoption of cleaner energy sources, creating a win-win situation for both the environment and the Bitcoin network. It'll be interesting to see how this narrative plays out in the coming years.

I think the idea that Bitcoin's energy use could boost renewable growth is a myth that's been blown way out of proportion. To be honest, it's more likely to encourage the use of fossil fuels, especially coal, in regions with limited access to renewable energy sources.

I think this is actually a valid point, a lot of renewable energy facilities are built near fossil fuel mining sites to reduce their carbon footprint, and if Bitcoin's energy demand pushes up the construction of these facilities it could still have a positive environmental effect in the long run. It's all about scaling up renewables to meet the demand, and if Bitcoin can be a catalyst for that then it's not all bad.

i think it's no myth, the increased demand for energy has accelerated the adoption of renewables, at least in regions where it's feasible. in places like china, coal-based energy isn't the only option anymore, so it's driving investment in wind and solar. the real question is whether the benefits outweigh the environmental costs of bitcoin's own footprint.
