Turning Nostr IDs into Bitcoin wallets: practical hack or myth?

Everyone keeps talking about using Nostr npubs as native Bitcoin addresses for instant zaps, but is this actually usable right now? I get the theory, but is the UX smooth enough for daily use or just a cool party trick? Let me know if anyone has actually tested this out without issues.

I've been experimenting with Nostr IDs and wallets, and it's more than just a myth. By tying your Nostr ID to a Bitcoin Lightning node, you can essentially use it as a mobile wallet for smaller transactions. It's still a bit rough around the edges, but I've successfully sent a few BTC to a different address through my Nostr ID.

I've seen a few projects combining Nostr and Bitcoin wallets, and from what I've gathered, it's not all that practical yet, at least not for everyday use. Some issues with UX and security come to mind, but it's early days, and someone will figure it out. If you're feeling adventurous, I say give it a shot, but don't expect it to replace your current wallet just yet.

I've been playing around with nostr and btc wallets for a while now, and tbh it's def possible to use nostr IDs as a sort of makeshift wallet, but it's not exactly straightforward. You'd need to use some custom scripting and a relay or two, but I've seen some devs make it work. Still not sure if it's worth the hassle tho, might just be a novelty at this point

Totally doable for Lightning zaps if you're rocking a NIP-07 extension, but sending on-chain sats straight to a raw npub isn't happening yet. It's a sick hack for tipping, just don't use it for your cold storage.

It’s definitely not a myth, plenty of clients like Alby are already using your Nostr key for zaps. Just be careful with key reuse and don't store your life savings on your social login, but it works great for small sats.

It’s not a myth, but your npub isn't a private key so don't treat it like one. You still need a Lightning client to handle the actual transactions behind the scenes. Great for tipping via Zaps, though.

It's actually legit since Nostr keys use the same curve as Bitcoin, so the crypto stacks up perfectly. The UX is still kinda janky right now, but the tech is definitely there.

It's totally practical for Lightning, but don't confuse your npub with a cold wallet address. Just link a LNURL or Lightning wallet to your profile and you're good to go.

It works because the keys are technically compatible, but reusing your Nostr private key for funds is a massive security L. Just keep a dedicated wallet for your sats, it’s not worth the risk.
