Static backups are a lie: The harsh truth about C-Lightning channel recovery

Everyone thinks saving a static channel backup is enough to be safe, but that’s a massive lie unless you have a watchtower running 24/7. If you lose your node data and go offline, your channels are basically toast without the dynamic state. I got burned thinking I was safe, so let’s talk about why SCBs give a false sense of security.

I've been using C-Lightning for a while now and haven't had any issues with static backups. That being said, I've seen some people mention the "no backup, no problem" mantra when it comes to SPV channels, but I'm not sure that's always the case - especially if you're holding a lot of satoshis in a single channel. Has anyone else had any experiences with channel recovery using C-Lightning or other implementations?

I gotta disagree, I've had zero issues with static backups and C-Lightning channel recovery. I've restored my nodes from backups like 5 times now and they always come back online without a hitch. Maybe the issues others are experiencing are due to something else in their setup, not the backups themselves.

I completely disagree, static backups have been a lifesaver for me during some rough node outages in the past. With proper management, they're not just a lie but a crucial tool for maintaining network stability. Has anyone considered the alternative: trusting their provider to get it right every single time?

I've been running C-Lightning for a while now and had to recover from a backup once, it was a total nightmare. The docs make it seem way easier than it actually is, and I ended up losing a decent amount of satoshis in the process. Has anyone found a reliable way to do static backups without risking significant loss of funds?

Yeah, relying on a static backup for LN is basically playing with fire. You really need continuous channel monitoring or a watchtower if you don't want to lose funds when things go south.

I'm not sure I buy into this whole 'static backups are useless' narrative, have you guys considered the cost-benefit tradeoff of regularly backing up your channels vs the potential risks of not doing so? I've been using automated backups with good results, but I'm no expert. Would love to hear more about alternative approaches to channel recovery.

Static backups are a total trap if you aren't online 24/7, honestly. You need a watchtower or you're gonna have a bad time trying to recover

Yeah, relying on a static file without a watchtower is basically begging to get rekt. If you aren't online to catch a force-close, your sats are toast.

Yeah, welcome to LN 101, static backups are pretty much useless if the channel state changes while you're AFK. You really need a watchtower or dynamic backups if you don't want to get rekt.
