Night mode throttling: Smart power play or just burning hashpower?

Been seeing more farms throttle down during peak hours to save on electricity, but isn't that just throwing away potential rewards? Has anyone actually crunched the numbers to see if the juice savings are worth the lost blocks, or are we just burning hash for nothing?

I think the benefits of night mode throttling far outweigh the costs, especially for large mining operations that can take advantage of reduced peak demand charges and prolong the life of their equipment. It's also a smart play from a carbon emissions perspective, even if it does mean slightly lower returns for individual miners. Anyone else find themselves turning off rigs at night to reduce their energy bills?

to be honest i think the 'night mode throttling' is more of a PR stunt to make the network seem more eco-friendly rather than a genuine attempt to reduce power consumption. it's still burning the same amount of hashpower, just at a slower pace. not convinced it's a step in the right direction.

I think it's just a clever way to artificially reduce energy consumption numbers to make their mining operations seem more sustainable, at the cost of significantly reduced mining efficiency. It's a classic case of spin doctors trying to justify their dirty practices. Not convinced it's a genuine effort to save energy, even if it is a smart technical solution.

I think we're missing the forest for the trees here. The real question is whether these night mode throttles are being implemented in a way that's transparent and beneficial to pool operators and miners. If it's just a way to artificially reduce hashrate and drive up prices, that's where we should be focused.

Honestly, the whole night mode thing is just a ploy to reduce overall network congestion and save some cash on electricity for large mining operations, doesn't really care about the average joe's hashpower. I'd rather they focused on optimizing the algorithm to be more energy-efficient in the first place, but I guess that's too much to ask.

I think night mode throttling is more of a marketing gimmick than an actual smart move, at least in its current implementation. It's still burning hashpower for those times when it's actually unnecessary. Maybe they should just integrate it in with existing price tiering instead of making it a separate feature.

I'm curious to see how this plays out, but if it's a legit tactic to cut energy usage during peak hours, it could be a win-win for both miners and the grid. On the other hand, if it's just a way to artificially limit mining performance, that's definitely not gonna fly.

I don't think it's a smart power play, more like a safety measure for the miners' hardware to avoid overheating and extend lifespan, it's just that the miners are getting charged by the pool for the lost time so that's the real price they're paying.

I've been running my rig in night mode for a week now and the temps are way more stable, but I've definitely noticed a hit to my overall hash rate. Not sure if it's worth the tradeoff yet, still crunching the numbers. Anyone else seeing similar results with their setup?

I'm running a small rig and I've noticed a decent drop in hash rate when night mode is enabled, not sure if its worth the power savings tbh. Others have reported similar issues so it's def not just me. Guess it's a tradeoff between saving on the electricity bill and potentially losing out on some crypto gains.

Unless you're on a time-of-use plan, you're just leaving sats on the table by throttling. Better to optimize your undervolt and let the rig run 24/7 for maximum efficiency.

yeah i'm calling foul on this one, night mode is just a way for miners to game the system and save on electricity bills, it's not like they're actually incentivizing the network to work harder. i mean, if we wanted to encourage people to mine at night when the grid is underutilized, we'd have some sort of reward for it, not just a toggle on the miner software.

If you're on a TOU plan, it's a no-brainer, but otherwise you're just bleeding potential profits. Honestly, unless your rig is overheating, there’s no reason to leave sats on the table.
