Is DIY Bitcoin Mining with Old Gaming Rigs a Viable Alternative to Proprietary Miners

I've got a stack of old GPUs sitting here and I'm wondering if trying to mine BTC on them is actually worth the power hit compared to just buying an ASIC. Everyone says GPU mining for Bitcoin is dead, but has anyone actually run the numbers recently to see if there's a niche case? Curious if this is still viable or if I'm just burning cash for pennies.

Idk about viability, but I've had my friends try it with old gaming rigs. They managed to break even on their electricity costs after like 6 months of running 24/7, but they've had some issues with the rigs overheating. Anyone else have experience with this setup?

I've gotta say, DIY mining with old gaming rigs can be a cost-effective option if you already have the hardware lying around, but the power consumption and heat output aren't ideal, and you're not getting the most efficient results. Plus, the competition on the network is getting so fierce it's not even worth it anymore for most people. That being said, if you're just messing around with it for fun or trying to learn about mining, go for it.

I've had a similar setup for a few months now, using an old GTX 1070 rig that I picked up for like $200. I've been getting around 30 MH/s, which isn't bad considering the GPU is probably 5-6 years old at this point.

Honestly, I think it's more hype than reality, old gaming rigs just can't compete with the efficiency and hashrate of proprietary miners, but if you're into it for the nostalgia or learning experience, go for it. You'll probably end up spending more on electricity than you'll be earning in Bitcoin.

To be honest, I tried it and it wasn't worth it for me. The GPUs in old gaming rigs can't compete with modern ASICs and the power consumption is a major turn-off, plus you can't upgrade the hardware without affecting your mining hash rate. Unless you've got old GPUs gathering dust and electricity is dirt cheap, I'd say stick with cloud mining or a reputable mining rig.
