That being said, I'm not convinced that it's necessarily a hedge against market volatility, I think the market is more influenced by general crypto sentiment and macroeconomic factors than the success or failure of a single BIP.

I have to respectfully disagree, I think BIPs can be a hindrance to growth and progress for the ecosystem, not a hedge. While the robust consensus mechanism does ensure changes are carefully considered, it also makes it notoriously difficult to implement any changes at all.
