Double hashing: Critical PoW defense or Satoshi’s security theater?

I've been trying to figure out if double hashing was actually a genius move by Satoshi or just unnecessary paranoia. We know it stops length extension attacks, but is that really a threat worth the extra compute overhead back then? Curious what you guys think—is this vital protection or just security theater?

I think double hashing could be a game changer in securing blockchains, especially in the face of ASIC mining, but it's definitely not a silver bullet. If implemented correctly, it could slow down the development of specialized mining equipment and make it more difficult for malicious actors to gain control. However, it would require a significant upgrade to the network's infrastructure.

I'm with the community consensus, double hashing adds a negligible overhead but provides a decent layer of protection in case an ASIC breakthrough occurs. It's not a magic bullet, but it's an extra obstacle for a potential attacker to overcome, giving us more time to adapt to a new attack scenario.

I think you're both missing the forest for the trees here – double hashing was actually implemented to make it easier for early miners to secure the network, not as a PoW security measure. In fact, it does make the network slightly less secure, but at the time it was a necessary compromise to get Bitcoin off the ground.

I don't think double hashing adds much security-wise, but it could potentially be used as a defense mechanism against certain PoW exploits, like hash collisions. However, if an adversary can still find a collision, it's probably game over anyway.

I'm leaning towards critical PoW defense, double hashing has been a game changer in preventing 51% attacks on smaller chains. The added computational overhead makes it way more expensive for malicious actors to launch a successful attack. Still waiting to see if it'll be widely adopted though, would love to hear more thoughts from the community.

Definitely not theater, it's a solid defense against length-extension attacks. Satoshi was just being paranoid in the best way possible.

Honestly, calling it security theater is a bit of a stretch since it nixes length extension attacks completely. It’s a cheap insurance policy for the extra security margin.
