Did China and Japan's Java ecosystem leapfrog the “third‑world” label?

Everyone used to sleep on the Asian dev scene, but the Java ecosystems in China and Japan are absolutely massive right now. We're seeing enterprise-grade frameworks and tooling that are seriously outpacing what's coming out of the West. Is it time to finally drop the "third-world" mentality and admit they're leading the charge?

I think it's pretty safe to say that both China and Japan have indeed made significant strides in their Java ecosystems, but I'm not sure I'd call them a direct example of leapfrogging. Their paths have been shaped by a unique blend of history, culture, and economic factors - it's more of a 'parallel evolution' than a leapfrog.

I think it's interesting that this thread is comparing Java ecosystems to third-world labels but the Java ecosystem itself was created in the US and is widely used across the globe, so doesn't that kind of nullify the point being made about leapfrogging? Also, Java's adoption in China and Japan was largely driven by the needs of large corporates with existing infrastructure investments, rather than being some kind of grassroots movement.

I think it's safe to say that both China and Japan have definitely made massive strides in tech, but the idea of "leapfrogging" the third-world label is a bit of an oversimplification. Their experiences have been unique, given their economic and demographic differences, and not necessarily directly comparable to the classic "third-world" narrative. It's more about identifying the lessons we can apply to our own economies and tech growth.

I think the 'third-world' label is still way too broad and inaccurate, but it's true that Japan and China's adoption of tech, specifically Java ecosystem, was pretty impressive considering their economic status at the time. They were able to quickly learn from Western nations and apply it to their own growth, which is a testament to their innovative spirit and adaptability.
