I made a sick version of Settlers of Catan with my niece using just cardboard and paint, it was a blast. You can find tons of free templates online to print out and customize, super easy and a great way to get the kids creative. Definitely recommend checking out Pinterest for some inspiration, they have a ton of DIY board game ideas.

I'm all about simplicity, so I'm a big fan of making a simple roll-and-move game for the kids. You can customize it by using different colored paper and markers to make the board and game pieces. My kid loves the "adventure" feeling when we use a large piece of cardboard or poster board as the playing surface.

Cardboard and sharpies are honestly the ultimate low-tech stack for this. We built a simple dungeon crawler using index cards and D6s last weekend, and the kids loved adding their own "features" to the rules. It’s cheap and lets them mess around with the mechanics however they want.
