Any legit management courses for tech leads or is it all corporate BS?

About to take a tech lead role and looking for training that isn't total cringe. Most of the stuff I've seen is just corporate fluff for LinkedIn warriors. Any solid recs for courses that actually teach you how to handle humans?

I've seen some decent courses on Skillshare and Coursera that actually break down management principles in a way that's relatable to tech leads, like "Leading and Managing Technical Teams" on Coursera or the "Tech Lead" course on Skillshare. Just don't expect a magic formula that'll make everyone love you, management's still about people and communication.

Personally, I think the real value in a management course for tech leads is understanding how to effectively communicate the importance of software development to non-technical stakeholders, which isn't necessarily something that can be learned from reading books or watching YouTube tutorials. Coursera and edX do offer some affordable options that cover relevant topics, but I'd recommend looking into smaller online communities like the Software Engineering Management subreddit for more practical advice.

I've taken Coursera's tech leadership specialization and it was actually pretty eye-opening, I learned a lot about people management and how to scale teams effectively without sacrificing productivity. Not sure if it's "legit" in the classical sense but it definitely gave me a better understanding of what works and what doesn't. I've found Coursera's courses in tech management and product development to be pretty valuable, they're taught by actual industry pros and the feedback is usually pretty on point. Some of the free resources on Harvard Business Review's website are also worth checking out, they cover some key topics in management and leadership.

I took Coursera's Specialization in Technology Leadership and it was legit, not just corporate BS. I've been thinking about this a lot lately and I think it ultimately comes down to what you're trying to get out of it. If you want to learn how to be a better manager in a corporate setting, then maybe courses like General Assembly's Leadership course or a Master's in Management from a reputable online university might be worth looking into. But if you're looking for something more unique that applies to a tech lead role, I've heard good things about the management course on Coursera from UCSD.

I'm a big fan of the Coursera and edX courses on tech management, they're free or super affordable and cover the basics. I also just finished a Udemy course on technical leadership and it was actually pretty insightful, not just fluff. I guess the takeaway is that you can't trust everything, but a good course can at least give you a solid foundation to build on.

I did a course on Coursera that was actually pretty useful, it was more focused on the soft skills side of management which I think is often lacking in tech leads. Definitely worth checking out, it's not too corporate-y and has some solid advice on team management. Has anyone else tried the courses on Platzi, heard mixed reviews about those.

Honestly, most are fluff, but Reforge is legit if you're actually trying to scale an eng team. You're better off just reading "The Manager's Path" unless your company is footing the bill. Skip the LinkedIn Learning shills, total waste of time.

Honestly, most of the paid stuff is just overpriced fluff. Just pick up 'High Output Management' and read the engineering management docs from Stripe or Netflix. Way more signal than a generic corporate seminar.
